Why Chasing Mini Sessions Keeps You From Building a Sustainable Photography Business
Mar 23, 2026Hi!!!
I want to chat about something that keeps coming up in my coaching calls... MINI SESSIONS!
To start off, mini sessions aren’t terrible, but chasing them constantly can actually hurt your business more than it helps. I know this because I’ve been there, and I’ve seen it with so many photographers I coach.
Here’s the problem:
Mini sessions force you to rush. Families and kids take time to warm up, and the magic moments don’t happen in 10 minutes. When you’re rushing, the client experience suffers. And then comes the editing!!! Hundreds of photos crammed into a tiny window of time. Exhausting, right?
When your calendar is full of mini sessions, it can feel like your business is thriving. But the truth? You’re trading quality for volume. You’re busy, yes… but that doesn’t mean you’re building something sustainable.
Why this matters for your business:
-
Your clients remember the experience, not how many photos they got.
-
Rushing through sessions keeps you from charging what you’re worth.
-
Mini sessions create a lot of work with little financial return.
-
Chasing mini session sales can leave you burned out, frustrated, and questioning your business.
Again, I’m not saying mini sessions are evil. They have a place. They can bring new people into your world, give you quick income, or be a fun seasonal offering. But relying on them as a main source of revenue isn’t sustainable.
Instead, focus on:
-
Delivering intentional, meaningful sessions that give clients an experience they’ll never forget.
-
Pricing your work so that your time, energy, and skill are valued.
-
Building systems and strategies that keep your business profitable without burning yourself out.
Mini sessions can be a piece of the puzzle, but your business will only thrive if you think bigger than volume and focus on sustainability.
